Assume No Security

Assume there is no security, unless you see evidence to the contrary. We will talk about the ways to check the security of a connection shortly. However, it is always best to just assume that anything you do on the Internet can be seen by anyone who cares to look for it.

Unless the party (Web Site) you are working with sets up a security system, then everything you do with that party will be sent 'in the clear'. This includes all things you might do over the web (Web browsing, e-mail, music, videos, chatting, etc.).

There are varying levels of security that a site might offer. The average Web site, for example, has NO security. However, most (but not all) web sites that want to deal with you as a client, will set up security, and make attempts to keep your information safe.
