How does the U.S. Postal service deal with similar street addresses?

Postal Network

Let's think about a similar 'Real World' situation. It is possible for two people (or businesses) to have the exact same Street address (forget about the city, state, and zip code for the moment). There are many places in the United States that have a street address of '800 Main Street' for example.

  • In Pewaukee, this is Waukesha County Techincal College
  • In Whitewater, it is UW-Whitewater.

The Post Office treats each City as it's own area. Mail must identify which City it is going to. Each City has it's own sorting office that can route the mail as needed. Each post office has a number (Zip Code) which makes it easier to route the mail.

The Post Office looks at incoming mail to determine whether it is going to the area they are responcible for. If it is destined for an address outside of their area (different Zip Code) they route it to another Post Office. If it has a different Zip Code, the street address is ignored.
