The Phone System

With the Internet being such a large collection (mess) of computers, how is it possible we can locate anything? How is it possible, that when I type in a site name (URL), I am able to locate that site, and get information back?
The answer to this is that every computer on the Internet has a unique address. Again, just like the Post Office example, in which each home and business must have a unique address.
This address is called an IP (Internet Protocol) address. It is in the form of four numbers, separated by periods. Each of the numbers is between 0 and 254. An example address may look like 127.0.0.1
