How the Internet Works

What is the Internet? How does it work? What is TCP, ISP, DNS, WiFi, and URL? Is my e-mail secure? What about my banking and shopping information? In this class we discover exactly what the Internet is. We look at how information gets from one place to another, and who can see it. How do you find the information you want. How do you know if you can trust it

This class is designed to cover in some detail how the Internet works. We look at how information is sent back and forth. We discuss the paths and computers involved in getting that information from one place to another.

Understanding how information travels will provide a good foundation for other Internet security / problem solving classes. This knowledge will be useful when working with a company that provides you with Internet service, and may help you be a more intelligent consumer. Some of the terms you may learn are as follows.

  • DNS
  • DHCP
  • Router
  • Server
  • IP / IP Address
  • Sub-net Address
